Encouraging children to eat more vegetables - Our Top Tips

12 January 2014 at 12:28

You've heard the saying .. '5-a-day keeps the doctor away'... This rule applies to children as well as adults! Children should aim for five servings of nutritious fruits or vegetables a day as they are full of vitamins and minerals and are important for good health and development.

Here are our top tips for encouraging children to eat more vegetables:

Children often need to try a vegetable several times before deciding that they like it so it's a good idea to serve it in different ways, or let them eat the veggies raw!

Make it fun! How food is presented can determine whether the child will want to eat it or not. Form shapes or images with vegetables  to get them interested!

Children often prefer uncooked vegetables to cooked ones. Veggie sticks make great snacks when dipped in hummus or yogurt!

Why not mash it up! Make a colourful mash by adding a little mashed carrot or sweet potato to boiled potatoes! Colourful, creamy deliciousness!

If your still finding it a challenge to get your little one eating vegetables you can try sneaking them in to their meals to start with to get an idea of what they like! Try adding peas to macaroni and cheese or shred carrots and add them to spaghetti sauce!

Another great way to encourage children to eat more vegetables is by growing a garden with them! This is also a fantastic way to teach little ones where food comes from and most kids will eat vegetables that they grow themselves! View our ideas for encouraging children to grow their own veggies!

The Veggie Bunch Books!

16 October 2013 at 15:18

Last week was Children's Book Week, an annual celebration of reading for pleasure for children that has been running for over 80 years.

So we thought it would be a great time to tell you about the Busy Peas Baby and Toddler Books.

The Busy Peas Books introduce children to fruit and vegetables at an early age and encourage them to read and learn how to grow their personal favourites! Using bright, fun illustrations our books bring the vegetables alive as characters. The cheeky personalities of the Veggie Bunch characters Peat Pea, Carry Carrot, Gene Aubergine, Tom Tomato and Stewart Strawberry come to life through the series of books illustrated by Busy Peas founder Jayne Liston.

There are currently 3 books in the series The Little Green Tomatoes, The Veggie Bunch Go Camping and The Little Peas! There is also a special Christmas book - The Veggie Bunch Christmas where the bunch get to meet Father Christmas himself!

While the little ones enjoy the stories they are also learning about their favourite vegetables and how to grow and look after them. What could be better!

To celebrate Children's Book Week 2013, Booktrust have announced a list of the 100 books to read before the age of 14 - have a look and see if your little pea's favourite is on the list!

We would love to hear how you encourage you little peas to read and which are their favourite books...

How to start growing a garden with children

29 August 2013 at 13:44

Growing your own garden isn't as scary as it might sound, it just needs a little time and care, and it's best to on a small scale.

Gardening is a healthy, outdoor activity that adults can enjoy as much as children! There are so many great reasons for growing fruit and veg with your children such as helping them to eat healthier foods (and saving money on shopping!), they are also able to learn where food comes from and that everything is sustainable.

Gardening is a great way for children to develop physical skills like hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills too.

The first step in planning a garden is choosing what you love to eat, this makes the whole activity much more exciting. Talk to your little peas about their favourite meals and what you could grow and eat, this way you are planning and enjoying the whole process together.

Giving your budding gardeners their own little gardening sets with little watering cans will encourage them even more! Of course you must be prepared for mess - but that's half the fun after all!

The look on their little faces knowing they are eating foods from their very own little gardens will be priceless! And don't forget the all important suncream and sun hats while out gardening with your busy peas!

Some easy to grow fruit and veg:
Carrots
Peas
Strawberries
Tomatoes
Herbs
Salad Leaves
Potatoes
Cress
